ABSTRACT
The excellent mechanical properties of natural biomaterials have attracted intense attention regarding the strengthening and toughening mechanisms. Natural systems are made of a wide range of composite functional materials that are able to develop themselves to best fulfil the necessities of long-term survival in specific and sometimes, harsh conditions. Learning by Nature, translating and formalizing this knowledge to mathematical/mechanics/physics models is a virtuous path that can open completely new horizons in structural design revolutionizing the current state of the art making a jump up to now impossible to do. The project will induce a paradigm shift in the way we think of fatigue design, by fully exploiting biomimetic and bio-inspiration as a driving force in the design process. A new and low-cost approach will be developed for designing smart optimized structures ideally fatigueless. The aim of the project will be to improve the design of the components for improved integrity and durability. The focus will be in reducing the Stress Concentration Factor combining experiments with numerical simulations on solutions inspired from Nature.
